The grass is not greener; it’s just more dangerous.

The marijuana cigarets being sold today are neither plants nor medicine, but are addictive drugs with harmful, life-changing side effects, by way of THC, its psychoactive compotent. In the hippy dippy 1960s the THC content of what was then called grass was negligible. Nowadays it is upwards of 30 percent, and even higher in edible products-gummies, cookies, and so on. Because THC is toxic to the heart, elevates the heart rate, causes impaired memory, hallucinations, and dramatic changes in mood it should be scrupulously avoided. Politicians and community leaders should be at the forefront of the effort to discourage marijuana use . Instead major politicians and heads of businesses are encouraging its consumption. Why? There is a clear money motive. But the beneficiaries will not be local communities but greedy, amoral investors and their mercenary partners in the political system. Wait!…An unholy alliance between politicians and thoroughgoing greed heads? ..why, I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Crime in society

Much of the crime being committed today can be traced to the climate of lawlessness that was not only condoned but encouraged by social equity advocates after the death of George Floyd. In the mind of these people criminality took on a virtuous coloration. Vandalism, boosting, firebombing, theft of services, and other forms of maladaptive behavior were thereby redefined as expressions of justifiable outrage by the oppressed.

Another day in the NYC subway system

As trips home from manhattan on the Bronx-bound 2 train at 930 at night go, this was typical.

I enter at 34th street 7th avenue and pass by a fat black man sitting on the south west corner staring into space. He is naked from the waist down and morbidly obese. A cursory look would indicate that he is having a spiritual moment, but, as a native New Yorker, I know better. This man is insane and he will explode at the slightest provocation. A blond-haired woman is staring at him, but wisely refrains from snapping a picture of him. She wants to do it and have a good laugh with her friends at his expense, but is keenly aware that doing so would be a huge risk.

Going down the escalator I see a group of Central Americans ten feet ahead. One of them is receiving directions from a woman dressed in a police uniform who looks more like a pastry chef than a law enforcement agent. One of them thanks her in broken English and they proceed in a very deliberate way. Two of the immigrants are young women pushing baby coaches that looked like they were purchased at a high-end store. The babies are mere months old. That is all the information I needed to assess the situation. These were illegal aliens. I’m sure that they are fine people, but it is highly unlikely they possess any marketable skills that would make them an asset to this country. More bluntly, they are leeches who the American taxpayer will be forced to support.

The 2 train is crowded but the atmosphere is calm and cheerful. But not for long. A skinny women with a rubberized stomach suddenly enters the car. She gives a fervent speech that lasts for ten minutes-all gibberish. As she leaves everybody present breathes a sigh of relief. A minute goes by and the hag returns and announces that “I am back”. Everybody groans in unison, but she isn’t fazed. After ten more minutes of convincing everybody present that she has lost the battle with her personal demons she genuflects and retreats into the subterranean metropolis.

Shortly thereafter a man selling orchids enters the subway car. He is a crude street type but a good salesman. He quickly sells out and is gone. A man dressed as and assuming the manner of a woman then enters. He poses in front of the door, as if waiting to be congratulated for his strenuous effort to defy nature, to wage war against common sense. It is difficult for me to contain my hatred of people like this. So I look away from him with the hope that he soon disappears . Fortunately the degenerate leaves after a few stops.

These are snapshots that I take of NYC subway system every day, with a dose of consternation.

Subway report

Subway travel is now more perilous than ever before, for these reasons.

(1) one has to be careful not to draw the attention of the hundreds of mentally ill and violent people who prowl about the subway system. One night after returning from work I made the mistake of ignoring my own advice in this regard. A slightly disheveled man walked past me on a platform at 135th street and Lennox avenue. He was in a rather heated argument with himself. As he walked past me I watched him carefully so as to maintain a safe distance. After proceeding ten feet past me he doubled back. “ what the f—-k you looking at, n—-r!” I was not afraid of this thug, but did want to get into a silly fistfight with him. I looked the other way and pretended that I did not hear who he said. After a pause that lasted several seconds, he walked away and resumed his profane soliloquy. In years past an encounter like this was a rarity; these days it is a daily occurrence. Years ago they assaulted their fellow passengers with foul odors; these days they assault them with knives axes, guns, and excrement.Years ago there was also there was a certain amount of shame felt by the homeless, even by those who were insane and drug addled. Many had shared their stories with news reporters and would tearfully admit that their sad predicament was caused by poor choices they had made. Nowadays the blame is shifted to society, greedy landlords, racism, sexism, the evils of capitalism, a system that has failed them. Their cluelessness combined with their pathological rage make the homeless a clear and present danger to the public.

(2) marijuana smokers are everywhere. They light up on the platforms, inside of subway cars, in between subway cars-all with impunity. One is often relegated to moving from subway car to subway to avoid the noxious fumes. That junk is legal in New York City, thanks to corrupt politicians. One can imbibe it in practically any open public space. But these particular potheads choose to bypass countless places in the city, where it is legal to smoke their weed, and light up in a locked subway car. These are wretched people!

(3) aggressive panhandlers and hustlers. Some of these characters are, one has to admit, quite colorful. There is the middle-aged white man with a cane who promises to rescue anyone being robbed or assaulted if you contribute to his cause. There is the Nigerian fellow who bangs a drum, sings in Yoruba, but never says what he is singing about. The general run of panhandlers, however, are menacing street types who not so much ask for money as demand it.

(4) perhaps of slightly lesser danger is the dysfunctional subway system infrastructure. Exit doors that are stuck, subway stops where the gaps between the platform and the subway car door are unusually large, and that just scratches the surface.

The New York City transit authority officials make no bones about the fact that the subway system is dangerous and full of nasty surprises. Their official position is that you should use it at your own risk. Kudos to them for their honesty.

Fight night at Barclays center in Brooklyn, New York

The much anticipated bout between Gervanta Davis and Rolando Romero went as expected, with Davis capsizing Romero in the 6th round . As knockouts go this was a fortunate one for the defeated fighter. When the lights went out he hit canvas Victorian style. But for the location of the knockout it would have been a violent face plant. For three rounds or so more than a few people in the arena doubted that this would be the outcome. They might have thought that Davis looked tentative, unsure of himself. But those who thought this way don’t quite understand the subtleties of the sweet science. Davis was probing the defense of his opponent. He noticed that Romero was lunging and dropping his hands as he punched. He noticed his untutored footwork. The next thing he needed to do was to perfect his timing and establish his range, and that would take several rounds to do. Once he accomplished this he eliminated any chance of Romero winning the fight. Neither Romero nor anybody in his corner realize as much. The post fight interview with Romero was both bizarre and disheartening. He repeatedly claimed that he was winning the fight, and suggested that it was stopped prematurely. He was asked who he would like to fight next, to which he answered: “Gervanta Davis”. “I was winning that f——king fight.” It is easy to pin this mind-numbing stupidity on a fighter who has just gotten his clock cleaned. But in this case the blame has to be put on his trainer and the people advising him. Instead of deceiving him into thinking that he is a great fighter, which he is not, they should be urging him to view his defeat as part of learning experience that he can build upon. His refusal to acknowledge that he had been beaten not only made his stock drop precipitously; it may well have destroyed his career.

Mandatory vasectomies?

Mickey Dollens, the Oklahoma legislator, has proposed a law that would require all males who reach puberty to undergo a vasectomy, demonstrating, yet again, the sorry state of the democrat party today. Years ago the party had genuinely smart people, such as Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The New York democrat held views on generational poverty and crime among blacks that many found repugnant. But even his staunchest critics were hard pressed to discredit his views which, many were forced to acknowledge, were well reasoned and based on years of solid research. Now comes Dollens who, in an effort to score political points and appease the riotous mob, comes up with this proposal. This is obviously a reaction to the rumor that Roe v Wade will be overturned. And like most of the current democrat provender it is devoid of logical analysis and there is no research to back it up. Anybody who has paid even casual attention to the law realizes that a law preventing unfettered access to abortion is not analogous to a law that makes vasectomies mandatory. Abortion restrictions will provide some level of protection to the unborn; but compulsory vasectomies will provide no protection against unwanted pregnancies, as such events happen in a thousand different ways. Then there the issue of parental control over the lives of minors. Dollens is just like so many government and teacher’s union officials who would whittle away at parental rights even as they ramp up their efforts to indoctrinate children under the guise of giving them a superior education.

The war in Ukraine continues. But why?

Ukraine is in a deadly war of attrition with Russia, and lacks the fire power to win it. But as the death toll rises, and as the damage to its infrastructure becomes more pronounced, powerful third parties keep egging it on. The experts say that Ukraine is not receiving military aid fast enough, or that it would prevail if they had possession of MIGS from Poland. The U.S. government has thrown millions in monetary assistance at Ukraine. Retired generals have come out of the woodwork. They appear on television and radio and handicap the war, as if it were a horse race. Many of them, seemingly oblivious to the protracted destruction of human life unfolding before them, appear to care only about displaying their military chops in front of the world. Missing in the discussion are suggestions about how to reach a peaceful resolution to the conflict. That is one reason why this shameless fratricidal war rages on.

Urban life

As the fight over abortion, the war in Ukraine, and long stories of dysfunctional Hollywood marriages dominate the news, one has to be reminded that there are other problems, closer to home, that demand our attention. One has to do with the failure of judges and law enforcement agencies to prosecute crimes in some of our nation’s major cities. The consequences of this have been dire. Big cities have become crime factories where criminal predators are allowed prowl the streets and act, with impunity, on their most base impulses. Once upon a time, when society and the law were stricter on crime, the criminal had to narrow down the types of offenses he could commit and live to tell about it; these days the law gives him so much leeway that he is overwhelmed as he thinks about the amount of crimes he can perpetuate with little or no legal repercussions. Two things served as a precursor to this current state of anarchy. (1) The riots and looting that followed the death of George Floyd. Millions of Americans witnessed this lawlessness in endless video loops. Many were appalled by this sad spectacle; many others were corrupted by it. Those so demoralized were further pushed to satisfy their venal urges by orders to police from mayors in Minneapolis, Seattle, and New York to “stand down” in the face of stealing, rioting, and vandalism frenzies. It was then off to the races. (2) Major media’s portrayal of the looting of high-end stores as a justifiable act of civil disobedience. In the current political and social climate, criminals and others with criminal intent have therefore made a logical choice: commit as many crimes as possible until the authorities start arresting and prosecuting for them.
